Turf Paradise track report

Email

The raids continued as Southern California invader Beneficial Bartok shipped to Turf Paradise to capture last Saturday's $40,000 Queen of the Green Handicap. The lack of turf racing at Hollywood Park this winter has resulted in a bevy of horses from that location coming to Phoenix for turf stakes.

Beneficial Bartok, owned by 5C Racing LLC and trained by Jorge Gutierrez, has spent most of her time facing some tough company in Southern California. It wasn't easy, however. Not only was it the first time she shipped away from Southern California, but she arrived here later than expected on Friday. Then she had to deal with an unfamiliar course.

"She seemed to struggle a bit out there, but it didn't stop her from winning" said Gutierrez. "In fact, at the three-eighths pole I was a little worried."

He didn't have to worry long. Under regular rider David Cohen she finished well to get up for a 1 1/4-length win. Beneficial Bartok paid $3.80 as the heavy favorite.

Gutierrez said her next start would likely be the Grade 3 Monrovia Handicap on the turf at Santa Anita on Dec. 31.

* Arlene Phillips may have turned 81 on Oct. 31, but the longtime horsewoman is not sitting ready to slow down. She has been a trainer on the Arizona circuit since the 1960's and boasts a number of training titles at the old Prescott Downs.

Phillips doesn't have near the numbers she used to but can still make her presence felt. On the day following her birthday, Phillips saddled Aburn Angel to win the nightcap, a 5 1/2-furlong claiming sprint. Phillips is also the owner. Through last weekend she had sent out six runners at the meet, with two of them winning. Over the past couple years she has had numerous starters at Zia Park, Albuquerque, SunRay Park, and Ruidoso.

Phillips also has a ranch where she maintains about 50 head and three stallions.
