Smarty B charges up the inside to narrowly prevail under Vicky Baze in the Glendale Handicap.

PHOENIX - Smarty B continued her superb form since moving to grass as the daughter of champion 3-year-old Smarty Jones captured Saturday’s $35,000 Glendale Handicap at Turf Paradise. The race was originally slated for Jan. 26 but that card was canceled due to rainy weather.

Owned by William Matthews, Marvin Fleming, and Flilippo Santoro and trained by Dan McFarlane , Smarty B displayed her versatility in the about 1 1/16-mile grass event for fillies and mares. Her previous sharp races came with the use of speed but this time, under Vicki Baze, she was content to stalk in fourth, got shuffled back into the lane, was still well out of it by midstretch but blasted home to get up in the final jump and win by a nose.

Smarty B has now finished first in five of her last six, though she was disqualified from one of those victories. She's now 4 for 6 on grass.

Racing for Gold, who beat Smarty B here in the fall before finishing behind her in their last two meetings, ran well again, sitting last early and finishing strongly for second. E Z Kitty, the top dirt female  around who was trying grass for just the second time, ran much better on this occasion as she dueled with Triveni before finishing a game third, beaten 1 1/2 lengths. The disappointment of the race was Triveni, who was coming off a romping win on this course Dec. 23. She dueled early, was giving way in the lane while veering out, interfering with Collating Lady. Triveni was disqualified from fourth and placed fifth in a field reduced to six after two scratches.

Smarty B ran the distance in 1:45.15 and paid $15.60. The winner’s share of $21,483 gives her earnings of $85,303 from 5 wins in 10 starts.
