Turf Paradise: Major Magic registers upset in Jack Coady Stakes
Email
PHOENIX – Major Magic invaded from Southern California and the 3-year-old gelded son of grass champion Kitten’s Joy relished the local turf as he charged from well back to capture Saturday’s $35,000 Jack Coady Sr. Stakes at Turf Paradise.
Owned by TG Racing LLC, Simon Hudy, and Robertino Diodoro and trained by Diodoro, Major Magic wasn’t far off the pace early in the mile grass event for 3-year-olds but he got shuffled well back going down the backstretch, briefly sitting last in the field of 11. However, he swung to the outside under Jorge Carreno, commenced a strong wide run that carried him past all his rivals to win going away by 1 1/2 lengths. Fable Haven, last early after a troubled start, rallied for second with Az Ridge, who dueled on the lead all the way to the eighth pole, finished third. Boca Bay, the 2-1 favorite, stalked the pace and was still second in the lane before weakening to seventh.
Major Magic ran the distance in 1:37.27 and paid $27.20. The winner’s share of $20,398 gives him earnings of $100,398 from 4 wins in 11 starts.
Smarty B couldn’t handle Racing for Gold when second to that rival on turf here Oct. 26 but turned the tables as she captured the $35,000 Chandler Stakes at a mile on the turf Saturday.
The regally bred filly (sire Smarty Jones won the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby and Preakness; damsire Fusaichi Pegasus won the Kentucky Derby), owned by William Matthews and Filippo Santoro and trained by Dan McFarlane, dogged pacesetter Double Java Girl from the start of the mile turf event for 3-year-old fillies, took over into the lane, opened up, and held a clear lead, winning by 1 1/4 lengths under Vicki Baze. Smokin’ Gray rallied for second while Racing for Gold, the 6-5 favorite, sat back and ran on for third in the field of seven without really threatening.
Smarty B ran the distance in 1:37.97 and paid $6.60. The winner’s share of $21,266 gives her earnings of $71,719 from 4 wins in 8 starts.

MOST HAPPY FELLA, reclaimed from last, drops to easier spot after setting pressured pace vs. odds-on Pinball; both wins last year came on this track. ARTIE LUVSTO PARTY has a knack for surprises, with three lifetime wins coming at 33-1, 17-1 & 11-1 (two on this track); entrymate EQUIVOCATION gets major rider switch first off a claim. PURE ATTITUDE among top 3 in wins & earnings and snug fit to date clause.
