Jaws 'n Paws, ridden by Jorge Carreno, captures the Mesa Handicap for fillies and mares.

Jaws n’ Paws, a $20,000 claim-back by trainer Robertino Diodoro at Santa Anita last month, backed up that confidence as the 5-year-old mare shipped to Turf Paradise and captured Saturday’s $35,000 Mesa Handicap.

Owned by TG Racing LLC, Jaws n’ Paws went right to the lead from her rail slot despite breaking slowly under Jorge Carreno, dueled with Notis Her, and then with Complete Rule before kicking clear into the lane to win easily by 4 1/2 lengths. She ran the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15.35 and paid $6.80. The winner’s share of $21,700 gives her career earnings of $205,220 from 9 wins in 23 starts.

Hard Seven, the even-money favorite, lagged back and came with a steady run for second though she was never a threat to the winner. Complete Rule pressured the winner from the start before finishing third in the field of five fillies and mares.
