Turf Paradise hires Horowitz as announcer

Email

Turf Paradise announced that Jonathan Horowitz is the track’s new race caller as current announcer Michael Chamberlain is moving to Evangeline Downs in Louisiana. Chamberlain has been the voice of the Phoenix track since 2008. He previously was the race caller at Sam Houston Race Park in Texas for 11 years.

“I would like to say a sincere thank you to the management, my co-workers, the horsemen, and all the fans at Turf Paradise,” Chamberlain said. “Six years went by so fast, but I loved every minute of it. Whatever the future may hold, I will always take pride in saying I was the announcer at Turf Paradise. It is a special group of people that work here, and I will miss everyone.”

Horowitz called his first Thoroughbred race at Turf Paradise when he was 14 as a guest announcer in February 2000. As a teenager, he practiced at the track while sitting in the stands.  The track announcer at the time overheard Horowitz, and management decided to let him call a race.

Horowitz continued to practice, and after getting his master’s degree, he went on to call races professionally at Arapahoe Park in Colorado and Zia Park in New Mexico.

Mr. Horowitz did a fantastic job at Arapahoe Park and I will miss him; he gave out good information, background, and clear and exciting calls. Yes, there are exciting calls at Arapahoe Park and when that happens even the prairie dogs in the infield stand up. Could we please, please, get Vic Stauffer? He probably wouldn't come out here though.

why miss him? Turf Paradise and Arapahoe don't overlap, I would think he'll do both. Jonathan is a really good guy and I'm thrilled he gets to call in Phoenix.

There are plenty of better announcers out there than this selection, but it's Turf Paradise and while he might be calling more days he sure isn't calling any big races like Zia started to develop. Jonathan got the job b/c Mike and him are friends. Mike got the Evangeline job b/c him and Don Stevens (at Delta) are friends. Travis Stone got the "so-called" backup NYRA job, Monmouth gig now Churchill b/c he and Larry C. are buddy buddy
