Hey Slick showed plenty of heart to capture Saturday's $57,600 Arizona Breeders' Derby, the marquee event on Arizona Breeders Day at Turf Paradise on a day that saw five stakes for Arizona-breds. Ridden by Scott Stevens, Hey Slick, the 6-5 second choice, lagged early, made a strong run to make the lead entering the lane, dispatched Captain Strider, and then had to fight off favored Corporal Tillman to win by a head. Hey Slick covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:46.29 and paid $4.40. Corporal Tillman was second, with Captain Strider over three lengths back in third. In other stakes action: * Komax had little trouble proving his superiority over six other Arizona-breds in the $50,000 Sandra Hall Grand Canyon Handicap. * Lil Easy jumped right out to make the running in the $40,000 Ann Owens Distaff Handicap and never looked back, hitting the wire nearly six lengths in front of Society Cat. * Mydak rallied from far back under Stevens to capture the $40,000 Dwight D. Patterson Handicap, a 1 1/16-mile turf race. * Restride won the $40,000 Joanne Dye by a length despite traffic problems. * Tedo shipped from Southern California in to capture Sunday's $40,000 Wildcat Handicap.
