Turf Paradise: Goinwest takes Patterson


Goinwest posted a mild surprise in the $50,000 Dwight D. Patterson Handicap, one of five stakes run at Turf Paradise for Arizona-breds. Trained by Brian Pitnick for the 1 1/16-mile turf event, Goinwest edged away under O.A. Martinez Jr. to win by 1 3/4 lengths. Hey Slick rallied from far back to be second. Social Order, the 8-5 favorite, finished fourth in the field of 10. Goinwest ($8.60) ran the 1 1/16 miles on turf in 1:42.82.

* Cave Springs ($3) easily took the $50,000 Joanne Dye, winning the 6 1/2-furlong event for 3-year-olds fillies by 5 1/2 lengths under Sandi Gann for trainer Kevin Lewis.

* Miss Helene ($18.40) went wire to wire for trainer Molly Pearson to upset the six-furlong, $50,000 Ann Ownes Distaff. Under Adolfo Morales, she beat Pop the Latch by 1 3/4 lengths.

* White Spar ($4.40) beat elders as the 6-5 favorite in the $50,000 Sandra Hall Grand Canyon Handicap. Trained by Kevin Lewis, White Spar won the six-furlong race by a half-length under Sandi Gann.

* Ez Dreamer ($3.80) dominated the $40,000 Arizona Breeders' Derby for trainer Kory Owens. Under Scott Stevens, he won the 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds by nine lengths as the 4-5 favorite.
