Turf Paradise: Bitterbutsweet turns table

Bitterbutsweet couldn't handle Cave Springs when they met in a turf allowance race here March 17, but she got her revenge when it counted, capturing Monday's $30,700 Scottsdale Handicap.

Owned by M&B Partners LLC and trained by Dan Morgan, Bitterbutsweet, a 3-year-old daughter of Lemon Drop Kid, stalked the pace from her outside post in the about one-mile turf contest, pounced on the leaders turning for home, and gamely battled to the wire to get there a half-length in front of the hard-charging Vegas Runner. Vegas Runner was last early and finished strongly to be second, a half-length ahead of longshot La Misma. Cave Springs, the 3-2 favorite, battled on the pace but couldn't quite keep up late, finishing fourth in the field of six 3-year-old fillies.

Bitterbutsweet covered the distance in 1:35.54 under Scott Stevens and paid $11.60. She might take a crack at elders in the $50,000 Desert Sky Handicap at a mile on the Turf Paradise turf on May 3.
