True Dancer a horse for course

Email

SAN MATEO, Calif. - For True Dancer, the $50,000 Luck of the Irish Handicap on the Bay Meadows turf Sunday will mark a return to his favorite course. A 7-year-old gelding, True Dancer has never finished worse than second in six tries on the turf here, but he has not raced on this course since Oct. 31, 2004, when he finished second to Ninebanks.

The 1 1/16-mile Luck of the Irish was scheduled to be run Saturday, but it didn't fill. Five horses were entered for Sunday.

True Dancer, owned by Robert Bone and trained by Jeff Mullins, was disqualified from second to seventh the last time he raced over this course, leaving his official record on the course at 4 wins and 1 second in 6 starts. His second-place finish came to Adreamisborn, who won seven stakes during his career.

Although it has been nearly 2 1/2 years since he's run here, True Dancer still is turning in big races using his speed to get good stalking position.

True Dancer's last victory came Nov. 23. He finished second in both of his starts this year, in the $75,000 Cotton Fitzsimmons Handicap at Turf Paradise in January and in an optional claiming race on the Santa Anita turf last month.

True Dancer, the likely favorite on Sunday, has a record of 9 for 27 and has earned $257,511.

A Gallant Discover comes off a third behind My Creed in the President's Day Handicap on the main track here Feb. 19. He ran fourth and sixth in two tries on turf.

Dealer Choice, who won his last start on Dec. 17 after finishing fourth behind True Dancer, comes north for the Bobby Frankel barn. Though looking for his first stakes victory, he has multiple stakes placings on the turf, including in the Grade 3 Generous as a 2-year-old in 2003.

Salty Humor comes off a third-place finish behind True Dancer on Feb. 10.

Courtly Jazz, the only stakes winner in the race but winless in 10 turf appearances, rounds out the field.

* Bay Meadows will resume its regular five-day Wednesday-through-Sunday racing schedule next week. The track had dropped Wednesdays for the last two weeks because of a lack of entries.
