Triple Crown nominee list numbers 414 after late addition

Even Echo, a Kentucky-bred 3-year-old owned and trained by Myung Kwon Cho, has been added to the list of horses nominated to the Triple Crown after the nomination sent in by Cho was received via “late mail,” Churchill Downs said on Friday.

Even Echo’s nomination brings the total number of horses nominated to the 2014 Triple Crown to 414, a record. The nomination makes a horse eligible to start in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes.

Churchill also said that it had amended the record-setting number of horses nominated to the Triple Crown that are trained by Todd Pletcher. Following a barn change by Bashart from Pletcher to Christophe Clement, 41 horses trained by Pletcher are nominated to the series, still a record and nine horses over the previous record Pletcher established in 2012 with 32.
