Trip Notes: Sugar Swirl, Hollywood Starlet replays

Saturday, December 10

Sugar Swirl (race 10)

Pomeroys Pistol was coming off consecutive 2nds in Grade 1 racess, a win in the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom and a 4th in the Grade 1 BC F&M Sprint, and that class edge was in full evidence as the 3-year-old filly proved a handy winner. She stalked the pace from her rail draw, which allowed her save ground. She bided her time, swung out into the lane and little trouble rolling past her rivals. She could go next in the Grade 3 Hurricane Bertie here Feb. 19. Pica Slew, making her first start in almost 11 months, pressed pacesetter Third Chance, early, took over going to the far turn, still had the lead in midstretch and stayed on gamely though she was no match for the classy winner. Still a nice return run. Strike the Moon lagged back early, moved up to stalk going to the far turn, just in front of the winner, but couldn’t accelerate with that rival. Third Chance, coming off 4 straight monster wins in Illinois, set the pace under pressure but gave way in the lane as she found these waters considerably deeper.

Hollywood Starlet (race 9)

Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer had said he was quite encouraged by Killer Graces’s good 2nd in the Sharp Cat behind Charm the Maker so he tried this bigger spot and was proven right as the daughter of Congaree gained her revenge and notched her first Grade 1 win. She stalked the pace of Lady Pecan, surged to the lead into the lane and stayed on gamely, keeping Charm the Maker at bay. Question now is whether they can get her to take her strong form over this track to other venues. Charm the Maker dogged Lady Pecan from the start, saw the winner surge past into the lane, doggedly went after her but just couldn’t get go her. She got beat, yes, but she’s the real deal. Lady Pecan, 4th behind the top 2 in the Sharp Cat, set the pace, tried to battle back when hooked into the lane but weakened late. Weemissfrankie, the heavy, broke very poorly to be well back early. She saved ground and closed for 4th but was never really a factor. Turns out she suffered a non-displaced condylar fracture of her right fore.
