Trickey Trevor wires field in Forty Niner Handicap

ALBANY, Calif. - Trickey Trevor ($4.80), took the lead out of the gate and dominated on the pace in winning the $100,000 Forty Niner Handicap at Golden Gate Fields on Friday.

What looked to be a speed-laden race changed complexion with the race-day scratches of Bilo and Saint Buddy after an overnight rain turned the track to wet fast.

"Speed is always dangerous," winning trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said. "Actually, when (Bilo and Saint Buddy) scratched, it changed the race. They would have put more pressure on him."

Trickey Trevor, under Russell Baze, had a one-length lead to the quarter pole in the 1 1/16 mile race. He opened a 3 1/2 advantage into the stretch and coasted home, beating Melanyhasthepapers by 2 1/2 lengths in 1:41.32. My Creed rallied from last to be third.

"He's undefeated (5-for-5) on off tracks, and he's always run well here (5-for-6), Hollendorfer said.

Hollendorfer's second entry, Ace Blue, raced wide and tired in his comeback while finishing fourth.

The victory, worth $55,000, was Trickey Trevor's 16th in 31 starts and lifted his career earnings to $410,435.
