Trainer Silvera records 1,000th win

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Laurie Silvera hit a milestone during Sunday’s card when he recorded his 1,000th career training victory in the seventh race, an optional claimer open to Ontario-sired horses.

Sorry About That, the 8-5 favorite, took command in the final furlong and drove clear to a three-length victory.

“He was in a league of his own in this crowd,” Silvera said. “He’s a very nice horse, and it was no surprise.”

The 74-year-old trainer, originally from Kingston, Jamaica, has been training in Ontario for almost 40 years, recording 32 career stakes victories and purse earnings of more than $24 million.

“It took me a long time to get to 1,000, didn’t it?” Silvera said. “I wish I could have done it in half the time, but better late than never. I enjoy winning races, from the lowest claiming race to the highest stakes race. It’s an enjoyment that cannot quite be quantified or described.”
