Trainer Profile: Art Sherman

Vassar Photography
Art Sherman has 25 at Del Mar, including ace sprinter Carthage.

For years, Art Sherman has been among the elite in the northern California training ranks. Sherman, 67, has dipped his foot into the Southern California waters from time to time, and he's launching an all-out assault during the Del Mar meet, stabling 25 runners there.

Sherman has been around the game a long, long time. He went to work at the track in 1953 for Rex Ellsworth, working with the great Swaps. He began riding in 1957 at Hollywood Park, notching his first win as a jockey later that year at Agua Caliente. He rode in the Midwest and Florida before returning to California in 1968. He retired from the saddle in 1978 and made the switch to training. He worked as an assistant for Paul Guidotti and served as a racing official in northern California, and then took out his trainer's license in 1980. The numbers since show that was a wise move.

He has been routinely among the training leaders in northern California the past 25 years, winning numerous training titles and making his name with astute claims.

His numbers off the claim have been staggering. He's a smashing 34 percent first off the claim for about the last 1 1/2 years. But his claiming eye doesn't just find a horse who can win that first race and vanish; he finds horses who keep their form. Sherman is a brilliant 33 percent second time off a claim.

His numbers are strong in all classifications: maiden claimers, 27 percent; straight maiden, 20 percent; claimers, 31 percent; allowance, 28 percent; stakes, 35 percent; and graded stakes, 36 percent.

He's strong when it comes to some surface and distance changes, but not with others. While Sherman wins 26 percent of the time going turf to dirt, he's only 11 percent going dirt to turf. He's a sensational 34 percent going route to sprint, but he's only 7 percent going sprint to route.

He has also shown he can get horse ready off a layoff. He's 15 percent off a layoff of 180 days or more, 29 percent off a layoff of 61 to 180 days. And, Sherman is a sensational 29 percent with 2-year-olds.

He has also shown his horsemanship with his direction of such stakes horses as Lykatil Hill, Lindsay Jean, and Perfec Travel, and he continues to develop classy animals today.

Sherman has a potent one-two punch with male sprinters Siren Lure and Carthage. Sherman claimed Siren Lure for $50,000, and he sent the horse to Hollywood Park, where he captured the Grade 3 Los Angeles Handicap and Grade 1 Triple Bend Handicap. Siren Lure has won seven of 10 starts since being claimed by Sherman.

Carthage will run in the July 30 Bing Crosby Handicap at Del Mar and Siren Lure will come back in the Pat O'Brien Breeders' Cup Handicap on Aug. 20 at Del Mar, Sherman said. Carthage missed most of 2005 after surgery for a bone chip in a hind ankle but has won three straight, including the San Carlos Handicap and Fairfax Stakes.

Sherman sent out Desert Boom to spoil the much-anticipated return of 2004 juvenile champion Declan's Moon at Hollywood Park a couple weeks ago and has plans for him, too. Desert Boom is being pointed to the Longacres Mile on Aug. 20 at Emerald Downs.
