Touch of Disney outfinishes Kingsport in Overskate

Touch of Disney, with Omar Moreno aboard, scores by a head at 11-1 in the Overskate.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario — Touch of Disney came down the center of the track under Omar Moreno to beat out Kingsport in an upset score in the $125,000 Overskate Stakes at Woodbine on Saturday.

Touch of Disney trailed the seven-horse field of Ontario-sired runners on the backstretch, while outsider Boreal Spirit set moderate fractions in the seven-furlong event.  Kingsport came from third to hit the front in the stretch, after Touch of Disney commenced his rally at the quarter pole. Touch of Disney was along in time to prevail by a head, in a final time of 1:21.51.

Jacks Escarpment weakened from a stalking position to edge out a fading Boreal Spirit for third. The favored Pink Lloyd lacked room throughout most of the stretch, and had to settle for fifth in his first career loss.

“He just settled where he wanted to be,” Moreno said. “I was a little wider than I wanted to be on the turn, but once I asked him, I had so much horse underneath me. I was lucky that we got there. He was traveling very well.”

Touch of Disney ($25.30) was supplemented for $2,500 by owner-breeder Bruno Schickedanz. Norm McKnight said he began training the 6-year-old son of Mr. Scotty this past spring.

“He’s been a great horse all season,” McKnight said. “He’s obviously had some unsoundness issues in the past, but Bruno has given the horse a lot of time. We’ve just done what we had to do this year, and he’s responded.”
