Torquay scores in Valedictory

EmailTorquay swept by the leaders the second time they rounded the far turn en route to a comfortable score in the $126,200 Valedictory Stakes, Woodbine's closing-day feature.

Torquay ($10.70) banked $75,000 for owner-trainer Nick DeToro, who claimed him for just $12,500 two years ago. He covered 1 3/4 miles in 3:01.08, while making his stakes debut under jockey Eurico Rosa Da Silva.

Favored Pellegrino pressed Love Dubai through dawdling fractions, as Torquay was rank while being rated at the back of pack.

Torquay made up ground quickly on the backstretch and hit the front at the quarter pole before coasting home on top by 3 1/2 lengths over Tap Show. Encinas finished another nose back in third, and Pellegrino faded to fifth in the eight-horse field.

"He's always been a little aggressive in the beginning, but that's the way he likes to be," Da Silva said. "Today, he was even more aggressive, because the pace was very slow. When I gave him a chance, he took off and was only going to keep going."
