Top 4 in Ann Arbor return in Oaks

MUSKEGON, Mich. - The $50,000 Michigan Oaks on Tuesday at Great Lakes Downs has attracted six Michigan-bred 3-year-old fillies, including the first four finishers in the $50,000 Ann Arbor Stakes here Aug. 19. A 1 1/16-mile race, the Michigan Oaks will be run for the 33rd time and is the eighth race on the card, which begins at 5:10 p.m. There will be no exotic or show wagering, because there are two stable couplings in the race.

Nell's Enjoyment gets top billing coming off her two-length victory in the one-mile Ann Arbor Stakes, which was her first stakes win. She has won 3 of 6 starts this year, and her three defeats have been third-place finishes. Owned, trained, and bred by Shane Spiess, Nell's Enjoyment will have leading rider Terry Houghton aboard and will break from the rail.

Miss Silversides, from the Bob Gorham barn, was second to Nell's Enjoyment in the Ann Arbor. She has finished off the board just once in five starts and will be looking for her second win. Mary Doser will ride Miss Silversides, who is owned by Marion Gorham.

Fiji Island, third in the Ann Arbor, will be coupled with Summer Cyclone in the Michigan Oaks. Laura Jackson trains Fiji Island for Millennium Farms, and Valerie Irvine owns Summer Cyclone, who finished fourth in the Ann Arbor.

Leading trainer Gerald Bennett has entered Hi Class Gift, who finished sixth in the Ann Arbor but returned to score a 3 3/4-length victory in a claiming race in her last start. She will be coupled in the wagering with Amandy, who finished eighth in the Ann Arbor.
