Tommie's Star hangs on

Tommie's Star ($12.20), sent to the front by new rider Travis Dunkelberger, held off Hands On's late charge by a nose in the $50,000 Mister Diz Stakes for Maryland-bred turf sprinters at Laurel Park.

It was the first win since August 2006 for the 4-year-old Tommie's Star, trained by Ben Feliciano Jr. Now 5 for 14 lifetime, Tommie's Star had finished second in his only other previous stakes appearance, the 2006 Maryland Million Turf Sprint.

Hands On, the 2-1 second choice in a field reduced to seven by four scratches, just fell short of catching the pacesetter, who covered 5 1/2 furlongs on firm turf in 1:01.09. Whata Monster finished third at 14-1. Mr Mutter, the 8-5 favorite, wound up fifth.
