Toccet breezes in return

Toccet won his comeback race on Tuesday, breezing to a measured three-quarter-length win over Ashmore in the $35,300 Widener Stakes at Philadelphia Park.

Jorge Chavez came down from Saratoga to ride Toccet, who is being pointed to the Grade 3, $750,000 Pennsylvania Derby on Sept. 1.

Toccet had only four opponents in the 1 1/16-mile Widener. He stalked the early pace of the claiming horse White Eagle Hall, took the lead on the final turn and was chased home by Ashmore. It was 18 1/4 lengths back from Ashmore to third-place finisher Soze. Toccet ran the distance in 1:45.20 and returned $2.20.

Toccet had not raced since winning the Grade 1 Hollywood Futurity Dec. 21. A 3-year-old Awesome Again colt, Toccet was taken off the Triple Crown trail to undergo what was described as bone remodeling in three ankles.

Owned by Daniel Borislow and trained by John Scanlan, Toccet has won 7 of 9 races and earned more than $775,000.
