Tiznow heads Cal-bred candidates


ARCADIA, Calif. - Tiznow, the two-time winner of the Breeders' Cup Classic, is the leading contender to be named California-Bred Horse of the Year for 2001 when the award is announced on Saturday at Golden Gate Fields.

Now retired to stud in Kentucky, Tiznow was recently named the top older California-bred male for 2001 by the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association.

The other equine champions are Gourmet Girl, top older female; Golden Ballet, 3-year-old female; Romanceishope, 3-year-old male; Go Go, sprinter; Native Desert, turf horse; Lady George, 2-year-old female; and Officer, 2-year-old male.

Cee's Tizzy, Tiznow's sire, led the state's stallions in earnings. Illinois Storm was the top freshman sire, Flying Continental had the most winners, and Bertrando had the highest earnings among 2-year-olds.

Warren Stute was named outstanding trainer and John and Betty Mabee were leading breeders by earnings.
