Tizdubai takes Sorrento

DEL MAR, Calif. - Little sister can get it done, too. Tizdubai, a full sister to Tiznow and Budroyale, ascended to the top of the West Coast's 2-year-old filly division on Saturday by rallying for a four-length victory in the $150,000 Sorrento Stakes on a gorgeous, summer afternoon at Del Mar.

Tizdubai stalked Dirty Diana, the even-money favorite, through early fractions of 22.09 seconds and :44.35 for a half-mile. Tizdubai then swooped past Dirty Diana just inside the furlong pole, and drew clear. Dirty Diana was a clear second, 4 1/2 lengths in front of third-place Solar Fire.

David Flores rode Tizdubai, who was timed in 1:17.15 for 6 1/2 furlongs on the fast main track. Eoin Harty trains Tizdubai for Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum's Darley Stud Management, which purchased Tizdubai -- a daughter of Cee's Tizzy out of the Cee's Song mare Seattle Song -- as a weanling for $950,000.

"I thought there'd be more speed in the race," Harty said. "I didn't think we'd end up chasing."

Tizdubai ($6) was the second choice in the wagering. She had won her lone start at Hollywood Park while overcoming trouble, but the adjusted time of her race was inferior to that posted by Dirty Diana in Del Mar's CTBA Stakes on July 25. Tizdubai had passed the CTBA to point for the Sorrento, while Dirty Diana was being brought back just 15 days after her last race.

"This filly doesn't do a whole lot in the morning," Flores said. "She's not too impressive at all. But in the afternoon, look out. I like them like that. She takes care of herself in the morning and takes care of business in the afternoons."
