Tiz Wonderful colt sets record at Okla. sale

A yearling colt by Grade 2 winner Tiz Wonderful sold for a record price at the Carter Sales Co., auction on Sunday, when he brought $67,000 during the organization’s annual summer sale in Oklahoma City. Carter Sales Co. was founded in 2007.

The auction on Sunday was held at the Oklahoma City Fair Grounds, and it featured yearlings as well as a handful of horses of racing age, four of which sold. A total of 55 horses sold for $487,450, for an average of $8,863 and a median of $5,100, according to a release from Carter Sales Co. The gross was a record for the sale, up 23 percent compared with last year, according to the company. The average was up 20 percent, while the buyback rate of 35 percent was also up compared with last year’s 26 percent.

“Our buyback race is a tribute to the incredible racing we have here, with maiden special weights running for $37,500 [purses],” said Terri Carter, sales manager. “We also have a great stakes schedule and the sale company added a $25,000 bonus to the Clever Trevor Stakes, so some consignors chose to hold on to their horses and take a shot at that.”

The Tiz Wonderful sales-topper is out of the winning Cherokee Run mare Serena Ballerina. Shawn Schabel purchased the Oklahoma-bred from the consignment of Brewster Ranch, agent for Clark O. Brewster. Schabel is from Kansas.
