Timo catches Icy Atlantic

Neither traffic trouble nor an extremely slow pace could prevent the determined Timo from winning Saturday's Grade 3, $250,900 at Delaware Park.

In the final furlong, Timo ($7.80) rallied furiously under Richard Migliore and nailed Icy Atlantic by a nose in the 1 1/8-mile turf race for 3-year-olds.

Icy Atlantic appeared difficult to catch on a course labeled soft after setting fractions of 52.46 seconds for a half-mile and 1:18.47 for six furlongs. Timo was sixth after six furlongs, and had 4 1/2 lengths to make up.

Although Timo got boxed in entering the turn, Migliore was able to angle out from the rail leaving the eighth pole and caught Icy Atlantic in the final strides. Commendation was third, 1 1/4 lengths farther back.

Trainer Bill Badgett said he would probably point Timo for the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Handicap Aug. 9 at Saratoga.

Master David made only a mild move in the middle of the race before coming up empty and finishing sixth of eight as the 9-5 favorite. His rider, Shaun Bridgmohan, said Master David may have disliked the soft turf.

"The first part of it, I had to peck at him to just get him a spot," said Bridgmohan. "He broke and he just wanted to flop out there. I had to give him a little nudge leaving the gate and the whole way down the backstretch."
