Time for a Cigar enters Rainbow Derby on a roll

Email

Double Eagle Ranch is having a year to remember with its 3-year-olds. First came Mine That Bird, who upset the Kentucky Derby at 50-1. A month later, Time for a Cigar took down the Grade 1 Ruidoso Derby for Quarter Horses.

Saturday, the ownership hopes to keep rolling. Double Eagle Ranch will be represented by both Time for a Cigar and Shaboomator in the Grade 1, $480,857 Rainbow Derby at Ruidoso Downs.

The 440-yard race for Quarter Horses drew a full field of 10.

Time for a Cigar is seeking his fifth straight win. His streak began at Sunland Park in February, when he won his maiden. From there, he captured a trial for the Ruidoso Derby, the finale itself, and then a trial for the Rainbow Derby. Mark Villa has the mount for trainer Tony Sedillo.
