Tiggy Wiggy takes Cheveley Park Stakes

Email

Tiggy Wiggy won her third straight race and her sixth from eight starts, capturing her first Group 1 in the Cheveley Park Stakes for 2-year-old fillies on Saturday at Newmarket in England.

Breaking on top under Richard Hughes, Tiggy Wiggy scarcely had a nervous moment, making all the pace en route to a three-quarter-length win over Anthem Alexander. The well-backed French invader High Celebrity had a relatively eventful trip and checked in third.

Trained by Richard Hannon Jr., Tiggy Wiggy won the Cheveley Park after capturing the Group 2 Lowther in her most recent race. Anthem Alexander had defeated Tiggy Wiggy when they met in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot. Tiggy Wiggy already has gone through a busy 2-year-old campaign, but there might be more to come, with a try against older horses in the Prix l’Abbaye de Longchamp possible next weekend on the Arc undercard.

Also at Newmarket on Saturday, Elm Park won the Group 2 Royal Lodge, a Breeders’ Cup Challenge Win and You’re In race linked to the BC Juvenile Turf.

Elm Park, trained by Andrew Balding and ridden by Andrea Azteni, finished third in his career debut in July but has since won three straight races, a streak capped off by his first group stakes try Saturday. Balding said Elm Park would be pointed to the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy Stakes, which comes up Oct. 25, just one week before the Breeders’ Cup.
