Tidal Pool targets Fantasy

Tidal Pool, who had been probable for the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks on March 26 off a stirring allowance win at Oaklawn, instead will target the Grade 2, $300,000 Fantasy here April 2, said her trainer, D. Wayne Lukas.

"She's doing well," he said. "I just want to take her to the Fantasy, give her the extra time off after that big effort.

"She's got the highest Beyer and best Rag sheet number of any filly in the nation."

Tidal Pool earned a Beyer of 102 for her Feb. 18 allowance win, which came against older rivals at a mile. She broke from the widest post and drew out by eight lengths.

Lukas is the second-leading trainer at Oaklawn, where his barn has been hot. Sunday, he accounted for the late double.

"I think they're just starting to get into sync, the barn is," he said. "We had about eight or nine seconds early in the meet."

Those are coming back around as wins, with Lukas's 14 victories placing him five behind Steve Asmussen. As for earnings, Lukas led all local stables through Wednesday, with $453,787. He will attempt to keep the barn's momentum going Friday in the ninth race, with Color Me Up. She could go favored in the second-level allowance for fillies and mares at a mile. The chief threat is Mindy Sue, who was the runner-up to Tidal Pool.

Bo Derek coming to Hot Springs

Bo Derek, an actress and a member of the California Horse Racing Board, hopes to get a chance to see Oaklawn for the first time while she is in Hot Springs to serve as parade marshal of the city's St. Patrick's Day parade March 17.

"I'd love to see the track," she said.

Derek has tight travel arrangements, but said she wants to catch morning workouts at Oaklawn. She has been following the proceedings on the track's Apple Blossom Invitational.

"I'm so excited about the big Rachel Alexandra-Zenyatta race," she said.

Derek is scheduled to be out of the country for a racing-related meeting the day of the race, but if those plans are altered for some reason, she intends to return to Hot Springs for the Apple Blossom.
