Ticonderoga: Rahy's Appeal romps

Rahy's Appeal took command on the far turn and drew clear for an 8 1/2-length victory in the $150,000 , a 1 1/8-mile race for older fillies and mares.

The Ticonderoga was scheduled for the turf, but was moved to the main track because of rain. Sixteen were entered, but only 10 would have been permitted to start on turf. Nine ended up competing on the sloppy main track.

The Lamp Is Lit was second, 6 3/4 lengths in front of third-place Sweeping Glance, the favorite.

Rahy's Appeal ($13.80), with Jerry Bailey aboard, covered the distance in 1:51.32. Tom Bush trains Rahy's Appeal for Marlene Brody's Gallagher's Stud.

"She really likes it wet," Bush said.

"She was much the best on this surface," Bailey said.

Rahy's Appeal, 3, earned her first victory in a stakes race. She had won three races previously, but her lone dirt victory had been against maidens last November at Aqueduct. She was second to Kate Winslet this summer at Saratoga in a division of the Yaddo Handicap, but Kate Winslet was one of the seven horses who were scratched from the Ticonderoga when it was moved to the main track.
