Three stakes on closing day

SUNLAND PARK, N.M - The final program of the Sunland Park meeting has a little bit for everyone, with a trio of stakes events on Tuesday sharing top billing.

The $50,000 Daylight Sprint Stakes will feature the best of the region's 3-year-old sprinters. Headed by stakes winner Hoya, the Daylight drew a field of eight. Recent winners Sky Jedi and Dos and Don't also merit respect.

In the $50,000 Getaway Handicap, a mixture of 10 Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds will compete at 870 yards. Gails Ten, disqualified from an open allowance win in his last start, will be seeking to make amends. Chocolate Mountain, winner of two straight while odds-on, also rates strongly.

Blue-collar distance types will have the spotlight in the final race of the season, the $40,000 Adios Amigo Claiming Handicap. A field of 10, each entered for a $12,500 claiming price, will go 1 1/4 miles.

The highweight in the Adios Amigo will be Pershing at 121 pounds. Trained by Greg Green, Pershing comes off a hard-earned head victory in a $15,000 claiming event locally on April 7. Twin Turbo and Mr. Pursuit are right behind in the weight assignments at 120 pounds.

The expanded 13-race program also includes a $40,000 open allowance for those 2-year-olds who failed to qualify for the $200,000 Copper Top Futurity, which was to be run on Saturday.
