Three riders injured in TuP spill

Jockeys Seth Martinez, Wilson Dieguez and O. A. Martinez, sustained injuries in a three-horse spill, Monday at Turf Paradise.

Seth Martinez, 24, the meet's leading rider, suffered an apparent broken collarbone. Dieguez, 29, sustained a contusion to the head. Both riders were taken to John C. Lincoln Hospital. O.A. Martinez, 38, suffered a broken nose and returned to the jocks' room.

The incident occurred during the running of the fifth race as the field of eight horses was racing on the turn. Seth Martinez, aboard Avie Cielo, was lodging his bid on the front-running Bay Street Blues, when his mount suddenly went down. Trailing Seth Martinez was Dieguez, aboard Cagey and O.A. Martinez, riding Catch The Sun, who were unable to avoid fallen rider and horse.

Seth Martinez is from Raton, New Mexico; Dieguez from Guatemala City, Guatemala and O.A. Martinez from El Paso, Texas.

Cagey and Catch The Sun escaped injury, while Avie Cielo had to be humanely destroyed.
