Three-peat for Johnie Bye Night

Johnie Bye Night and trainer Charlton Baker continued their domination of the George W. Barker Memorial Handicap at Finger Lakes.

The 6-year-old gelding Johnie Bye Night ($4.70) won the six-furlong Barker for New York-breds for the third straight year, giving Baker his fifth consecutive victory in the stakes.

Ridden by John Davila Jr., Johnie Bye Night opened up a 4 1/2-length lead with a quarter-mile remaining and was under pressure to finish three-quarters of a length in front of stablemate Mr. Bourbon Street - the same one-two finish as the 2007 Barker. Zippero was another 2 1/2 lengths farther back in third.

In winning for the fifth time in seven starts locally, Johnie Bye Night covered the distance on a fast track in 1:10.65.

His only two defeats locally came when he was second to the Kentucky Derby winner Funny Cide in last summer's Wadsworth Memorial Handicap at 1 1/8 miles and a runner-up finish as the 2-5 favorite in a 4 1/2-furlong overnight handicap on opening day of the meet last month.
