Thistledown: Jockey Schorr fined for standing up on mount during race

Jockey Faith Schorr was fined $1,000 by the Thistledown stewards Monday for standing up on her mount while leading inside the sixteenth pole in Friday’s seventh race. Schorr was aboard L’il Miss Sunshine, the 3-2 favorite in the $2,500 claiming race, when she stood up before the wire. Although she resumed riding after a few strides, she finished second, beaten a half-length by 11-1 shot Roma’s Gal.

The stewards’ ruling on the incident states that Schorr stopped riding in the stretch, “causing her mount to be beaten.”

Schorr’s agent, Bobby Fiesman, said Tuesday that the stewards had discussed a possible “30 day suspension” with him, which would be in addition to the fine.

Schorr explained her actions by saying, “I had to re-adjust my position as I was suffering back spasms and was uncomfortable.”

Schorr was involved in another riding incident in Saturday’s fourth race when apprentice jockey Marcello Cardoso handed her his whip at the top of the stretch. Cardoso’s mount faded to a sixth-place finish, while Schorr’s mount finished fourth. The stewards spoke to Schorr and Cardoso regarding the race, but a ruling has not yet been issued.
