Theriot to appeal suspension

Email

Jamie Theriot plans to appeal a three-day suspension for failing to ride his mount to the wire at Los Alamitos on July 7, according to his agent, Saul Marquez.

Fast Cotton set the pace in a maiden race for 2-year-olds at five furlongs but faded in the final furlong to finish fifth. Fast Cotton was beaten a head for fourth by Neighborhood Bully.

The suspension is scheduled for the final three days of the Los Alamitos summer meeting – Friday through Sunday.

The maiden race was won by the promising Zulfikhar, a Bodemeister colt trained by Bob Baffert. Zulfikhar was always near the front and drew off in the final furlong to win by 3 3/4 lengths, earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 82. He is a candidate for the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes, a $200,000 race at 6 1/2 furlongs at Del Mar on Aug. 12.

Zilfikhar was purchased for $750,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Florida March sale of 2-year-olds in training and is owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum.
