Them There Eyes rallies

Them There Eyes, who had one horse beaten turning for home, uncorked a furious stretch kick under Jose Espinoza that carried her past the field en route to a three-length victory in the $111,400 Mount Vernon Handicap for New York-breds at Belmont Park.

Factual Contender, who had the lead turning for home, finished second by 2 1/4 lengths over Rewrite.

It was the fifth victory from 10 turf starts for Them There Eyes, and sixth win from 14 lifetime races. Them There Eyes, a 4-year-old daughter of Holy Bull, is owned by Akindale Farm and trained by Kathleen Feron. She ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.06 and returned $15.80 to win.

"This is a nice filly," Feron said. "She beat Factual Contender in this race and she was the champion [New York-bred] filly last year. That says a lot about Them There Eyes."

Feron also ran My Dina, a 3-year-old half-sister to Them There Eyes, who finished sixth in the eight-horse field.

"I really thought she would love the soft turf," Feron said. "They are both good fillies. Them There Eyes is the better one."
