Thady Quill overcomes trouble, layoff

DEL MAR, Calif. - Thady Quill, unraced since January due to a hip injury, rallied between horses to win Friday's $79,050 Wickerr Handicap at Del Mar.

Ridden by Eddie Delahoussaye, Thady Quill was stuck behind the leading flight of horses on the final turn. But Delahoussaye, who won three races on Friday, guided Thady Quill to the rail and then through a small opening between pacesetters Lesters Boy and Spinelessjellyfish to win the one-mile turf stakes by 1 1/4 lengths.

"Usually they are intimidated, but he went right through it," Delahoussaye said.

Owned by Gary Seidler and trained by Bobby Frankel, Thady Quill ($10.40) was timed in 1:35.02.

"I thought we were dead meat, but he's got such a turn of foot," Frankel said. "The horse dragged him through there."

Touch of the Blues, the even-money favorite, rallied wide on the final turn and finished second, a half-length in front of Spinelessjellyfish.

Thady Quill is unbeaten in three starts this year, having won two allowance races at Santa Anita in January. Previously, he won a minor stakes in England in 1999 and was third in the 1999 Prized Stakes at the Breeders' Cup meeting at Gulfstream Park.
