DEL MAR, Calif. – Terra’s Angel is named for the late daughter of co-owner Terry Eoff, and on Monday at Del Mar, the filly had wings.

Terra’s Angel ($40) overcame a wide draw with an ideal trip under Sasha Risenhoover and held off 46-1 shot One Fast Broad to win the $103,105 Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf, leaving Risenhoover and trainer Dallas Keen understandably emotionally drained.

Risenhoover had ridden Terra’s Angel to a debut win at Lone Star Park only days before her namesake, a mother of three, died from cancer. Risenhoover came to Del Mar to stick with Terra’s Angel, who raced twice here. Terra’s Angel was third in the Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes on Aug. 5, then moved to the turf, stretched out, and won on Monday.

“The big reason I came out here was to be with the filly,” said Risenhoover, whose eyes were red. “This is so special.”

Keen had not won a race all meet. He hid his eyes behind his trademark sunglasses, but his voice betrayed the emotion.

“This is a nice one to wind up with,” he said.

Terra’s Angel was forwardly placed throughout, moved for the lead entering the lane, had a clear advantage a furlong out, and held safe the onrushing One Fast Broad, who had started from the outside post in the field of 14. Multiplayer was a half-length farther back in third. Medaglia Gold, the 9-5 favorite, faded to 10th after setting the early pace.

Terra’s Angel was timed in 1:37.57 for one mile on firm turf.

Terry Eoff, who owns Terra’s Angel with Johnny Evans, trained Terra’s Angel for her first start before turning the filly over to Keen.

Terra’s Angel, by Drosselmeyer, was purchased as a yearling for $7,500 one year ago at Keeneland. She earned $60,000 on Monday to increase her earnings to $96,420.
