Teofilo retired from racing

Teofilo, the undefeated European juvenile champion of 2006, has been retired without having raced as a 3-year-old. His breeder and trainer, Jim Bolger, made the announcement on Thursday after a scan of the Galileo colt's aching right front knee, the same one that had caused him to be withdrawn from both the 2000 Guineas and the Epsom Derby.

Owned by the trainer's wife, Jackie, Teofilo went 5 for 5 as a 2-year-old for earnings of $645,596, all of his wins coming at seven furlongs, among them the Group 2 Futurity Stakes, the Group 1 National Stakes, and the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes, beating the now retired two-time Group 1 winner Holy Roman Emperor in the last two.

Plans for stud duty have not yet been made.
