Tense Wager rallies to win Courtship Stakes

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Tense Wager ($34.80), the longest shot on the board, made up nearly seven lengths in the final quarter mile as she passed all four of her rivals to win the $67,725 Courtship Stakes at Bay Meadows on Sunday.

Tense Wager was last as Timeintown, Bernstein's Babe and Chrisane contended for the lead down the backstretch and around the turn. Favored Bernstein's Babe backed out of the action first when in tight between her two rivals. Chrisane, who had raced four wide around the turn, took command in the lane, but Tense Wager roared past her from outside to win the six-furlong race by three-quarters of a length in 1:12.17.

"There was good speed, and it was set up nicely for her," winning trainer Duane Offield said. "Around the turn, I thought she'd get nothing, but Ron rode her well and waited like I told him. We've been wanting to go two turns with her."

Tense Wager won her debut and was second in the Solano County Juvenile Filly Stakes in her second start. She earned $39,675 for the victory and now has earned $69,590 with two victories in five starts.
