Teen charged in Ellis robbery

A 17-year-old male from Evansville, Ind., turned himself in to authorities Monday night in connection with an attempted armed robbery at Ellis Park on Sept. 1, closing day of the meet.

According to Ellis spokesman Mark Geary, the teen has been jailed after being charged by the Henderson County (Ky.) Sheriff's Office with first-degree robbery, first-degree assault, and two counts of wanton endangerment. Because of his age, the teen has not been publicly identified. Geary said the teen worked at Ellis during the entire 39-day meet.

Authorities say the teen was one of three men who demanded and received money from mutuels clerks but eventually threw down the money bags when fleeing after security was called. There were no serious injuries, and the men escaped with little or no money. Warrants have been issued for the other two men.
