Taz upsets Black Ruby in Nevada

In another renewal of a long-running mule racing rivalry, Taz avenged his May 23 Los Alamitos loss to Black Ruby when he won the feature race Sunday at the Humboldt County Fair in Winnemucca, Nev.

With Jack Kaenel riding, Taz jumped to the front of the six-mule field and stayed there, holding off Black Ruby to win by a nose. Black Ruby, with James Burns aboard, finished six lengths ahead of third-place Fancy.

The final time for the 400-yard race, with a purse of $900, was 23.59 seconds.

Taz, a 9-year-old Idaho-bred trained by Ruth Burdick, paid $7.60 to win as the second betting choice to the 1-5 Black Ruby. The $2 quinella paid $2.20.
