Tattersalls session sees gains

The Tattersalls December mare sale in Newmarket, England, had no seven-figure mares in its third session Wednesday but still produced healthy gains over last year's equivalent session.

The sale, which has more horses in its catalog this year, followed a record-setting Tuesday with more gains on Wednesday. The third session sold 232 lots for about $22,005,207 and an average price of approximately $94,849. Compared in the local auction currency of guineas, the gross was up 32 percent from last year's equivalent session, when just 189 horses sold. The average price this year increased 7 percent from last year.

Wednesday's session-topper was the 5-year-old mare Summitville, who sold for 450,000 guineas, or about $812,700, to Katsumi Yoshida. Mount House Stables consigned the mare, a daughter of Grand Lodge out of Tina Heights.

The auction was to continue through Thursday.
