Taptam leads throughout at Hoosier

Taptam led from start to finish to win the $104.900 Wigwam at Hoosier Park Saturday afternoon.

Trained by Bret Calhoun, Taptam dueled for the early lead before taking over after a half-mile. The 5-year-old had a 2 1/2- length lead coming into the stretch and jockey Francisco Torres kept the mare’s mind on business, winning by two lengths.

Afleet Deceit under Leandro Goncalves held on for second, 2 1/2 lengths in front of entrymate W W American in third.

French Kiss under Joe Johnson came from far back to finish fourth, but due to the entry finishing second and third, rounded out the trifecta. Taptam ran the mile and a sixteenth over the fast track in 1.44.60 and returned $5 to win.

In the race preceding the Wigwam, Linda’s Lace went from last to first to win the $88,000 Merrillville for Indiana-bred fillies and mares.

Jockey Francisco Torres was content to keep 7-year-old Linda’s Lace in the back of the pack early before asking her for her run in the stretch. Linda’s Lace responded to get up by a neck in the field of 10.

Trained by Robert Zahl, Linda’s Lace ran the six furlongs over a fast track in 1.11.40. Serena’s Reward set the early pace and led every step but the last two under Rodney Prescott to finish second, a half-length in front of Ms. Cat Princess. Linda’s Lace returned $7.40 to win.
