Tampa Bay: Wire Bound rebounds

Tom Cooley
Wire Bound wins the 19th running of The $100,000 Tampa Bay Breeders Cup at Tampa Bay Downs.

Wire Bound, who was disqualified from a second-place finish in an allowance prep Feb. 5, atoned for that performance with a 2 1/4-length victory in the 19th running of the $100,000 Tampa Bay Downs Breeders' Cup Stakes.

Ridden by Eduardo Nunez, Wire Bound sat well off a blistering pace set by Above the Wind, including a half-mile time of 46.37 seconds and six furlongs in 1:10.21. Wire Bound then set after the leaders down the middle of the course, rallying past Above the Wind and Native Hawk leaving the furlong marker and drawing off late for the victory.

Remind, the 5-2 choice in the field of 12, finished second, and Above the Wind held on for third.

Wire Bound's time of 1:40.14 was three-fifths of a second off the track record of 1:39.65 set by Legs Galore in 1999.
