Tampa Bay: Ronnie Allen Jr. injured in spill, out 4-6 weeks
OLDSMAR, Fla. – Jockey Ronnie Allen Jr. remains in St. Joseph’s Hospital recovering from injuries suffered in a spill during the running of the Wednesday’s fifth race at Tampa Bay Downs.
Allen, who was third in the rider standings with 57 wins, was aboard Noorelaine in a mile maiden turf race and was challenging leader Ten Sweet Kisses from the outside into the stretch when Ten Sweet Kisses, who had been very fractious in the gate, came out under jockey Daniel Centeno and Allen’s mount clipped his heels. Allen was able to push himself clear to the inside and avoid any other rivals, but landed hard on his back.
He was taken to St. Joseph’s hospital where doctors discovered several broken ribs, a punctured lung, and slightly lacerated liver. He is expected to be released on Monday and to be sidelined from four to six weeks.
There was a stewards’ inquiry conducted into the race and Ten Sweet Kisses was disqualified and placed last.
Tough luck Ron. Better luck when you come back.
