Ricardo Mejias leads the Tampa Bay Downs apprentice colony and has shown signs he could have a bright future.

OLDSMAR, Fla. - With Ronnie Allen having another good week at Tampa Bay Downs that included a riding triple on Thursday and Fernando De La Cruz and Adamar Santos posting riding doubles on Saturday, the older riders are faring well. At the same time, this season’s crop of apprentices is the strongest in recent years.

Ricardo Mejias leads the local apprentice crew with 13 wins and has shown some signs he could have a bright future. Jerry Villegas has five wins, and Carlos Villasana, a native of Venezuela, has three victories at the meet. Both have shown steady improvement as the season has progressed.

I like Villasana. He never seems to be in a bad spot. I think he will be the best of the three apprentices long term.
