Tampa Bay: Cool Spell in Gasparilla

Rallying along the outside on the turn, Cool Spell made her 3-year-old debut a winning one as she moved past the leaders in midstretch and went on to a two-length victory in the $60,000 Gasparilla Stakes.

With Daniel Centeno aboard, Cool Spell stalked the early leaders along the outside through an opening quarter of 22.44 seconds and a half in 45.86. Centeno then set sail for the front from the outside on the turn of the seven-furlong stakes.

Tooke Tooke had dueled for the lead to midstretch but couldn't turn back the winner. Cool Spell covered the distance over a fast track in 1:24.36.

Sheerie Belle rallied late to take the place by 1 1/4 lengths over Gallant Secret, while 17-10 favorite Gotta Rush closed late for fourth after breaking slowly.

The win was the second in four career starts for Cool Spell, the Grand Slam filly who was making her first start since finishing third behind Classic Elegance in the Grade 2 Debutante at Churchill Downs last summer.

Trained by John Hennig, Cool Spell paid $10.60 .
