Great Attack, making his first start since the Breeders' Cup, connects as the favorite under Angel Serpa in the Tampa Turf Dash.

OLDSMAR, Fla. - Great Attack made his 2013 debut a winning one Saturday when he roared past pacesetter Silver Cloud through the final furlong to post a 1 3/4-length victory in the $75,000 Tampa Turf Dash at Tampa Bay Downs.

Under a well-judged ride by Angel Serpa, Great Attack was content to lurk just off a hot pace contested by Silver Cloud, Hold On Smokey, and P.J's Back as that trio contributed to a quarter of  21.19 seconds and half of 44.31 while racing as a team into the stretch

Turning into the stretch, Silver Cloud and jockey Fernando Delacruz shook clear on the lead and held a length advantage a furlong out but by then Great Attack was in full flight under Serpa and ran down the leader through the final sixteenth under brisk urging.

Great Attack, the 4-5 choice of the field of six, returned $3.80 while covering the five furlongs over a course labeled good in a very solid 56.13.

Silver Cloud was 2 1/2 lengths clear of Come On Smokey for the place with Duty Free rallying late to finish fourth.

The win was the seventh from 19 career starts for Great Attack, who last saw action in the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Santa Anita in November. The $45,000 winner's share of the Dash brought his career earnings to $453,010.
