Tamazirte upsets at Longchamp

Email

France's juvenile filly champion, Proportional, was beaten into third place in her seasonal debut by Tamazirte in the Group 3, $105,000 Prix de la Grotte at Longchamp on Sunday in a paceless mile that turned into 1 1/2-furlong sprint.

A daughter of Danehill Dancer, Tamazirte prevailed by a neck over Soneva, with Proportional a half-length farther back in third. Trained by Jean-Claude Rouget, Tamazirte clocked the mile in 1:42.78 on good to soft ground.

The winner, sent off at 6.90-1, will now square off with a more highly regarded stablemate of hers, Elusive Wave, in the French 1000 Guineas on May 10, when she will meet both Soneva and Proportional again.

On the same day, Silver Frost and Westphalia, first and second in the Group 3, $105,000 Prix de Fontainebleau on Sunday, will renew rivalry in the French 2000 Guineas, in which they will meet Le Havre and Naaqoos, the first two home in Friday's Prix Djebel.

Trained by Yves de Nicolay, the 3-2 Silver Frost came late to defeat Westphalia by a half-length. Trained by Aidan O'Brien, Westphalia was running for the first time since just failing in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf last October. Silver Frost covered the mile in 1:39.49.
