Tale Of A Dream rallies in Courtship Stakes

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Fast-finishing Tale Of A Dream ($17.60) rallied from fourth in the stretch to win the $67,250 Courtship Stakes at Bay Meadows on Sunday.

The 2-year-old filly, who was purchased for $30,000 through the internet, trailed pace-setting Western Dame, odds-on favorite Global Finance and She'sgotthekey in the stretch of the 5?- (five one-half) furlong race. Jockey Francisco Duran angled her out and beat Global Finance by one length, winning in 1:04.14.

"I was a little concerned, but she practically did the same thing the first time she ran," Duran said. "She really started running at the end."

The victory was the first thoroughbred stakes win for trainer Bret Layne. Tale Of A Dream, who is now 2-for-2 with earnings of $49,010, got sick after winning her debut on Aug. 18.

"Good horses don't need excuses," Layne said. "Once she got outside, I was confident. The farther she goes, the better she runs."
