Talamo has nice Sunshine Millions lineup

The California-based jockey with arguably the best book of rides for Saturday’s Santa Anita Sunshine Millions races is Joe Talamo.

Talamo will ride Caracortado in the $300,000 Turf over 1 1/8 miles, All Due Respect in the Distaff and Cost of Freedom in the Sprint. All three will be short prices, or in the case of Cost of Freedom, favored, in the races for California-breds and Florida-breds.

Sunday, Talamo was aboard All Due Respect for her final prerace workout, a half-mile in 51.80 seconds.

Owned by Al and Sandee Kirkwood, All Due Respect has won 3 of 12 starts and $263,832. A 4-year-old Florida-bred filly by Value Plus, All Due Respect has yet to win a stakes, but was second by a nose in the Grade 3 Harold Ramser Handicap on turf at Hollywood Park on Oct. 17, leading by four lengths in the stretch.

All Due Respect returned to win an optional claimer over a mile on the main track here on Dec. 27, racing near the front before taking the lead in early stretch. Trainer Kathy Walsh said the key to a successful race for All Due Respect in the Sunshine Millions Distaff is for Talamo to settle her early.

”I want to see her relax,” Walsh said. “She relaxed a little bit the other day.”
