Taiaslew best Wash.-bred


AUBURN, Wash. - Taiaslew was named Washington-bred horse of the year for 2003 at the state's annual awards banquet at Emerald Downs.

Taiaslew, a son of Slewdledo who races for Shelli Tracy and Stan Ryan, earned the accolade by winning 4 of 7 starts, including the Grade 3 Alberta Derby and three other stakes.

Taiaslew was also honored as the state's best 3-year-old. Other awards went to Sundance Circle for top 2-year-old; Crystal Mt. Stevie for top 2-year-old filly; Youcan'ttakeme for top 3-year-old filly; I'madrifter for top older horse; Infernal McGoon for top older filly or mare; Handyman Bill for top turf horse; and Unyielding for best sprinter.

Special achievement awards went to trainer Grant Forster and rider Scott Saito. Former Emerald Downs director of racing Grant Holcomb was honored with a lifetime service award.

The Mark Kaufman Media award went to Jon White for his television coverage of the Grade 3 Longacres Mile.
